The LPC women are currently reading an online course called Fix Your Eyes on Eternity. It also suggested a book called Heaven by Randy Alcorn which I have begun reading. It makes many interesting points about Heaven and backs them up with Bible passages.
One of the interesting assertions that Alcorn makes is that Hell is the default destination, not Heaven. I think we often operate as if Heaven is the default position. I have been to funerals where speakers state that the deceased is now in Heaven despite there being no history of involvement with the Lord Jesus Christ. I would like to think that they are in Heaven but Alcorn back his statement up with the well-known Bible verse that follows:
“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” Matthew 7:13-14
I don’t think that’s meant to scare us but rather as an admonition to take a look at what our focus is in life. Is it on the Lord and the things He values or is it on earthly things? But most important, have you asked Jesus into your heart and been forgiven for your sins? When we are forgiven, it makes us eligible to pass through the narrow gate. Faith in Jesus. That is what we and our families need to strive for.
