“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18
Sometimes we just do not know what to do. We are not sure which path to take, what decision to make, or how to move forward. Whether it is a college, a career, or a place to live, life can feel hazy and unclear. But in those moments, this verse gives us three simple and powerful truths to hold on to.
First, rejoice always. Joy is not dependent on circumstances. Even when life gets hard, we can find joy in the unchanging love of God. He still has a purpose for us. There is always hope in Him.
Second, pray continually. God is not far off. He is near, and He listens. Even if the answers are slow or silent, the presence of God is not. Sometimes the comfort of knowing He is there is exactly what our hearts need most.
Third, give thanks in all circumstances. Notice that it does not say to be thankful for all circumstances. There are things in life that are deeply painful—loss, illness, injustice. We do not have to be thankful for those things. But even in the midst of them, we can still give thanks. We can thank God for His faithfulness, His presence, His promises. We can trust that He is still good and still in control.
These three things are not just helpful tips. They are the will of God for us. When life feels confusing, this is a place to start.
God, help us to rejoice in you, to pray from the heart, and to give thanks even when it is hard. When we do not know what else to do, help us to begin right here.
