The night [this present evil age] is almost gone and the day [of Christ’s return] is almost here. So let us fling away the works of darkness and put on the [full] armor of light.
Romans 13:12 AMP
I’m sure many of you are like me in that there are things that we have done in our lives that we would just as soon never see the light of day.
Growing up, I was very careful to be aware of my surroundings before I acted disobediently to my parents. I would isolate myself from their sight and by doing so felt the freedom to do whatever I pleased. Whether stealing quarters out of the piggy bank on my parents’ dresser to buy hotdogs at the corner A&W stand or to mistreat my younger siblings when my parents weren’t around. These things were unthinkable when mom or dad were close by.
In the same way we as children of God have a tendency to block God out of our consciousness when we act selfishly.
So how can we “fling away the works of darkness and put on the [full] armor of light” as today’s verse directs?
Well, just as the light of day changes how we act or behave around others; in the same way, the light of God’s Son Jesus will influence our thoughts and behaviors as well. And we will be the better for it.
So, if we would build into our lives habits that would remind ourselves of the reality that our loving creator God is always with us it would have a powerful effect on our thoughts and actions.
I am reminded of a quote from Brother Lawrence; The night [this present evil age] is almost gone and the day [of Christ’s return] is almost here. So let us fling away the works of darkness and put on the [full] armor of light.
Prayer,
Father God, I asked that your Holy Spirit would help me to put into practice a conscious awareness of your presence, grace and love, knowing that you are for me, with me, and in me to will and to do your good pleasure. Amen
