Worry

by Jon Hathorn on May 27, 2020

"Can any of you live a bit longer by worrying about it?" Matthew 6:27

Let's pretend I have a friend named Ken, and a long time ago, I heard him respond to another guy who was obviously worried about many things.  This guy was thinking about money (of which he had plenty), his house (and what a mess it was inside), his child getting his driver's license (his son was not the most responsible guy), and his daughter's boyfriend (who was kind of wanting to marry his daughter and yet he was not very good at keeping a job). Ken told him, "Hey, if it would make you feel any better, Jon and I can sit here and worry with you." I thought it was pretty funny, and Ken did as well.  Our friend had a shocked look on his face and said in all seriousness, "What good would that do - that's a waste of time."

The truth is, Ken did use that phrase, "Hey, if it would make you feel any better, I can sit here and worry with you."  In fact I heard him say it many times.   And it is kind of funny, because worry drains us.  It puts our circumstances in front of our relationships. We don't have to worry.  Yes we want to care, yes we want to hope, yes we want to be responsible - but asking God to come between our minds and our circumstances is a good thing - that's what helps remove worry. Here are two tips: one, remind yourself of past times that God was there, and second write down your plan and ask God for deliverance. Worry is a thief and steals our time and strength!
