Trust The Compass

by Jim Dunn on March 16, 2021

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct yours paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6

Many years ago, while deer hunting in Western Pennsylvania, I ran into a problem. I had been tracking a nice buck for a number of hours. There had been just a little snow on the ground as I started the day but now it was raining and all the snow was gone. No problem I had been here before, so hour after hour I kept moving forward. No problem I knew these woods, or so I thought. About mid-afternoon I realized I was not going to find this buck today and I discovered I was a little bit confused. Actually, a lot confused- I was lost. I did not know how to get back to my buddies warm cabin. Yes, I was fearful and anxious. Being LOST is not fun.

In the stock of my old rifle was a small compass. My grandfather had many years before drilled a small hole in that stock so he could glue into it a compass. WHY? If you ever get lost TRUST THE COMPASS was his motto. TRUST THE COMPASS!!!

There in the rain, lost in the woods, I had two choices: One, trust my instincts or two, trust the compass. Believe me, I wanted to trust my instincts for they were way better than that old compass. But, I listened to those old words TRUST THE COMPASS. I did and several hours later I made my way out of that lost condition and was headed back to that warm comfortable cabin. I have never forgotten that day or those anxious feelings.

Today and everyday, I trust the only true compass for life and that is the Word of God. The Bible is the best compass anyone can ever have. It gives us hope. It directs our path. It shows us the love of our Savior Jesus Christ. It provides forgiveness. It offers grace beyond anything we could imagine and so much more. TRUST THE COMPASS!!!

Oh yes, my instincts still get in the way but then those wonderful words return TRUST THE COMPASS. When I do, oh my what a blessing and when I don’t, what fear and anxiety arrive at my doorstep. So here is a thought, if you are fearful or anxious why don’t you TRUST THE COMPASS.  Go to Proverbs 3:5-6.  Trust the LORD and stop leaning on your own frail and feeble instincts. Instead Trust the Infallible WORD OF GOD!! Good is Good All the Time and then some
