The Word of God is Exciting

by Jon Hathorn on October 13, 2020

"Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true."  Acts 17:11

Yesterday I spoke about Mr. Scott, my high school Geometry teacher, and today I share with you about Mr.Spaulding, my Trigonometry teacher.  I have never met a math teacher with as much enthusiasm as. Mr. Spaulding.  When he gave a lesson, he used at least two or three pieces of chalk each period.  He never spoke monotone, but had enough enthusiasm for the entire class and sometimes the entire school.  The chalk would often break when he was enthusiastically sharing the details of a formula.  The dust would fly off the board when he used his bare hand to wipe the board and blow the dust off his hand. If someone asked a question, his enthusiasm would go up and he would get really excited.  It didn't matter how basic or complicated the equations were, he was all in and everyone knew it. He wanted us to know what he knew and he took it very personally for us to know it.

The Bereans had eagerness as they read the word of God.  Compared to the Thessalonians, they also had greater character.  Probably because of a love for the Word of God.  Not just a passive attendance in church or Sunday School but an approach of enthusiasm to know the Word of God.  They were excited and had a mindset saying, "We get to go to Bible Study," rather than "Well it's Sunday I should probably go to church." When we want to know the Word of God, it helps.  When we want to apply the story or the principles, it helps. When our hearts desire to be shaped by the very words from God, it makes a difference.  When we want our minds to be transformed in the way we think, our lives begin to change.  Psalm 119:97 puts it this way, "I love your law or Lord." And Psalm 19:14 states the desired results and reasons for eagerly loving the Word of God, "May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in Your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer."
