The Wonderful Counselor

by Justin Linscheid on December 15, 2021

“… and His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor…”  Isaiah 9:6

I’ve had many times in life when I wasn’t quite sure what to do or where to go. I remember seasons of wondering, “who will I marry, where will I go to school, how should I respond to this person, what do I do with this hurt I am feeling, how should I apply this Bible passage, how should I spend my time, what should I eat for breakfast????” Some things in life are pretty easy to figure out and others can be very complicated. Thankfully, the Bible reminds us that we don’t have to figure it out by ourselves.

One of the titles given to the Messiah is “Wonderful Counselor”. In the book of Daniel, Jesus is also called, “The Ancient of Days.” In other words, this Wonderful Counselor has been around for a while. In fact, there has never been a time when He didn’t exist. He has seen a thing or two. Add to that, He is omniscient, which means He knows everything that there is to know. On top of that He is accepting, humble, gentle, gracious and unconditionally loving. Don’t you want a counselor like that to talk to?

This world can be taxing and tiring at times, especially when we feel anxiety, are in a circumstance we don’t want to be in, or when we simply don’t know what to do. It can create a weight and give a heavy heart. 1 Peter 5:7 says, “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for us”. In Matthew 11:28 Jesus says, “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” God is a living God who invites us to come to Him with our burdens, our worries, the stuff we can’t figure out, etc. because He cares about us. It will lighten the load.

Jesus is a Wonderful Counselor. There is none better. Go to Him. Ask Him. Unload your heart. Cast your cares upon Him. His ears and arms are open. Receive His guidance, wisdom, empathy, love. He is a Wonderful Counselor.
