The Little Things

"Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established." Proverbs 16:3

I had an interesting moment a few weeks ago.  I am a therapist and see clients at a charter school once a week. I had an unusual day in that I was going to see three new clients. As a rule, I play a therapeutic game called "The Talking Feeling And Doing Game" when I first meet with a young person. As you go around the game board you answer questions. I have played this game many times and model being open with my answers so they will be open with theirs. I was meeting with a rebellious teen and encouraging her to talk with me. I drew a card that said “Do you believe in God and why?” I have drawn this card before but it gave me a moment’s pause because I did not want to alienate this young girl by sounding like a holy roller. I could have passed, but decided I would be honest with her. So, I plunged ahead and gave an honest answer: “I do believe in God. I don’t believe in the big bang theory because I believe that God created the earth.” I went on to say that: “I am very impressed with His creation in that there are still creatures being discovered after all these years.”

She commented with a little smile on her face: “I knew that was what you were going to say because of your necklace.” I reached up and touched the cross around my neck. We continued on with the game and had a very successful first session.
