Remembering Important Things

by Justin Linscheid on May 29, 2023

An older couple sat in their living room when the wife started complaining to her husband. "You are getting more and more forgetful, it's terrible, you never bring me what I asked for." He rejects this claim and says: "This is not true; I'll prove you wrong and bring you some food from the kitchen. What do you want?" The wife asks him for a grilled cheese sandwich, and he leaves for the kitchen. After a while he returns with a piece of apple pie. The wife looks at him and says: "See, I was right. You forgot the whipped cream.”

We can be forgetful people. Sometimes it is harmless and humorous, but sometimes it is detrimental to our well-being and the well-being of others, like forgetting to take important pills or forgetting where you set the baby down.

Also, forgetting the sacrifices made by many to establish and maintain the freedoms we have in this country has harmful consequences. We grow ungrateful, unrespectful, and lack honor for many who have sacrificed for our sakes. Some have paid the highest price, giving their lives for our country. We would do well not to forget this and live with an attitude of gratitude, respect, and admiration. A day like Memorial Day helps us to remember all that has been done on our behalf and not take it for granted. What we enjoy daily cost someone something. Thank you to all who have served our country and made sacrifices, even unto death, for the sake of others.

Another thing we would do well to remember is all that God has done for us. He too paid the highest price one the battleground of the cosmic war that we are in. God battled against evil and overcame Satan, sin, and death at the cost of His life.

I like a song by the Christian worship artist Tommy Walker called, “We Will Remember”. One line in the song says, “We will remember, we will remember, we will remember the works of Your hands. We will stop and give You praise, for great is Thy faithfulness.” It is all too easy to forget about what Christ has done for us. We become prisoners of the moment and forget that His faithfulness has indeed been great.

Take a moment to stop and remember those who have given their life for you, including the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. May we remember and truly be grateful.
