As a teacher, I was pretty in tune to the student’s attention span. Sometimes they were polite and not very interested. Other times they were fidgety but completely aware and grasping.
I am aware that studies show that the attention span of a middle school kid was about five minutes long. There is a practically a need to entertain a little bit while teaching. Here’s the interesting thing: the attention span of an adult is probably about the same length of time; however, they just don’t let you know that you’ve lost them. Adults look at you, smile, nod, and it appears they’re listening, but you’ve lost them all the same.
What is it that captures your attention? Or makes you pay closer attention? Sports? Movies? People? Politics? Those items of interest probably change over time. But this is what I know about people. The older you get, the more search for significance dominates your thinking. It certainly gets my attention.
I hope your attention focuses on essential things in life not just the entertaining, high energy, emotional, adventurous and dramatic.
Let’s make our focus, interest, attention, be upon the things of God and the things God says are important and vital in our relationship with Him. “The Apostle Paul put it this way: “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” Philippians 4:8
And don’t forget the Bible is full of drama, adventure, emotions and life changing information.
