NO

by Harry Ulep on October 23, 2021

"When your days are over and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood, and I will establish his kingdom. He is the one who will build a house for My Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.”  2 Samuel 7:12-13

Have you ever had to hear the heart burdening, two letter word, “no”? Hearing the word “no” can be especially tough when you have a fully thought-out plan and a lot of eagerness to see it come to pass. The word “no” can cause confusion, anger, and anguish because of the passion we have for our life plans.

King David was familiar with the word “no”. He wanted to build a temple for the Lord. It seemed like a great plan to him. But God’s response to him was “no”. God’s “no” to David’s plans had a greater purpose. To David’s credit, David responded to God’s “no” with praise.

God eventually revealed that through the line of David, God was going to put a King on the throne whose kingdom would never end. God kept His promise and established a kingdom through His Son, Jesus Christ, a descendant of David.

Are we willing to accept God’s "no" in exchange for God’s greater plan? Are we seeking Him daily rather than the temporary fulfillment the world gives? Are we surrendering all in hopes that God’s kingship reigns in our lives and our faith in Him flourishes?

When God says “no” you can be sure that He has a greater “yes” in mind. Praise God for both!

I am reminded of these lyrics from the hymn “I Surrender All”:

All to Jesus I surrender
All to Him I freely give
I will ever love and trust Him
In His Presence daily live
