March Madness

by Jon Hathorn on April 24, 2024

“But as for me, I will watch expectantly for the Lord” Micah 7:7

If you are a college basketball follower, you will be familiar with the term “March Madness.” This expression goes back to the Illinois’ statewide high-school basketball tournament. In 1939, a spokesperson with the Illinois High School Association, Henry V. Porter, wrote an article called “March Madness.” He wrote, “A little March madness may complement and contribute to sanity and help keep society on an even keel.”

Sixty-eight teams are part of the ‘March Madness’ tournament which happens every year. With so many teams and different matchups, there are always upsets and unpredictable results, and the games tend to be incredibly competitive, with highlight after highlight being shown over and over again.

It is not a bad illustration of life. Life is full of twists and turns - changed plans and interruptions. Many are unexpected. There’s pain. There’s victory. There’s defeat. Living is full of unpredictable results. But life, like March Madness for a fan, is worth your time and effort. In fact, the ups and downs of our existence are the very things that bring joy, anticipation, energy, hope, and fun into our day-to-day routine. It seems to me that much of the Bible talks about living in anticipation of what life may bring. Check out these verses. Romans 8:24, “For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope; for who hopes for what he already sees?”  Joshua 3:5, “Then Joshua said to the people, “Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you.”

So, if you are finding yourself dreading your future. You do not feel much like getting up in the morning. Maybe you need to be infused with a little “March Madness.” Not the basketball kind, but the Bible kind…anticipating a new day, looking for exciting possibilities, and hoping that God will use you to make a difference in someone’s life. Now, that makes me want to invest time and effort.

And in case you wanted to know - I am an advocate for the North Carolina Tar Heels.
