Mama Beans

“The fear of the Lord is instruction in wisdom, and humility goes before honor.” Proverbs 15:33

A few years ago, I went to a women’s conference at a church camp called Calvin Crest and I heard a speaker who went by the nickname Mama Beans. She was a powerful speaker and talked about the alabaster box with which Jesus was anointed with oil before His crucifixion. The anointing was by a woman whose character and motives were not understood. Mama Beans encouraged us to reach our zenith, but what really stuck with me was a story she told about herself:

She was accustomed to speaking at her home church, but when she moved to a new area she thought she would be able to continue speaking at the new church right away. The pastor had a different idea and wanted her to prove herself in the new church. I don’t remember if he assigned it to her or she came up with it on her own, but she took on the job of cleaning the bathrooms. In time the pastor saw her devotion and asked her to speak to the congregation. Her humility brought her to a place where the pastor could see her worth. I need to remember that when I find myself doing a chore which I dislike. I need to do it as unto the Lord.
