Living Water

by Jon Hathorn on July 30, 2021

“He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’”  John 7:38

I was riding in a car recently and listening to a couple of people talk about the number of areas of the world without clean water to drink. A few stories were shared about medical teams that go in to treat these people. They were emphasizing the need for digging wells to provide clean water for these struggling areas.

One of the stories was about a team of 42 doctors and other medical staff who went to Honduras to treat about 1,200 people. The fix was temporary because every one of these 1,200 cases was due to contaminated drinking water. What a blessing to help these 1,200 people, but it was clear to the medical people that these people would struggle again due to the lack of clean water.

This made me think about two things. First, what can I do about a real problem like this water dilemma? Maybe I should consider supporting some sort of ministry that would alter people’s lives in a dramatic and ongoing way.

Secondly, I am reminded that in the story of The Woman At The Well, Jesus speaks of living water that will never have us thirst again, never worry about the payment of our sin, and never think about lacking peace with the Heavenly Father.

In life, we so often substitute something less and inadequate for that which is really necessary. Just like the people in Honduras who need clean water, so all the people of the world need the purity of Jesus’ death for our sins and the LIFE only He can provide.
