Learning Through Song

by Lise Bachman-Karnes on August 30, 2022

Putting Bible verses to song has been a major way many of us have learned them. This is a long-standing Christian tradition, going back to Bible times, as much of Scripture was sung by the Israelites for memorization purposes. For older Christians such as myself, we may know more theology through hymns than through Bible passages. Many songs lean heavily on Scripture which gives them extra meaning.

Years ago, I was looking on the radio for Christmas music and came upon KYCC which is a local Christian radio station. As a result, my sons and I listened to Christian radio throughout their childhood. Despite my older son’s grumbling that they should have a song about Moses, they heard a lot of good theology.

Fast forward to my grandchildren. I have been delighted to hear my grandson, Jaxson, belting out songs he has learned. At Christmas time it was Go Tell It on the Mountain, thanks to Teri BetGeorge, and this week it was What a Mighty God We Serve which he learned at his preschool. He also listens to KJOY with me in the car to and from his house. So, I am grateful to all the Christian artists who help us to hide God’s Word in our hearts.

I encourage you to listen to some Christian music throughout your week and allow the words to touch your mind and heart as you sing praises to God.

Sing joyfully to the Lord, you righteous; it is fitting for the upright to praise Him.” Psalm 33:1

Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Ephesians 5:19b-20
