Jesus Take the Wheel

by Lise Bachman-Karnes on May 20, 2022

One Wednesday I had quite an adventure. Wednesday is the day I pick up my grandson for the day. As I was nearing the Downing Street exit the low tire pressure symbol lit up on my dashboard. I was not too concerned because I had had a low tire pressure issue with my back right tire before and America’s tires had put in a plug. I figured I’d stop at Gas for Less and add some air. As I headed down the ramp, however, all of a sudden, my car was shaking and making a horrible noise. It felt like the car was falling apart. I cried out “Jesus, take the wheel!” and crept down the off ramp, turned and parked in a kind of no man’s land where food trucks like to park. When I got out to look at my car the left rear tire was in shreds and barely hanging on. Not the one with the plug!  I was horrified and immediately called AAA. She assumed it would need to be towed.

Meanwhile, the taco truck arrived and wanted his usual spot in the shade. He really had to angle around my car but I wasn’t about to move. I thought they were mad at me but when I learned the tow truck was going to be a long time in coming, I decided to buy some good will and get myself some lunch in the process. I got a nice cold Diet Coke, my favorite, and two authentic style tacos. The young lady who waited on me said they could see I was in trouble. She was very concerned. I decided to wait by the car for my tacos in case the tow truck showed up. The man was kind enough to come out of the back of the truck toward me with my steaming hot tacos. Judging by the steady flow of traffic to his truck he was coping just fine.

After consuming my tacos and reading my book for the longest time the tow truck finally appeared. Felipe just shook his head when he saw my tire. He had no answers as to why it happened.  I asked him if I had ruined the rim as it looked okay to me. He thought it looked fine and said I didn’t need to have it towed as long as I had a good spare.  Praise the Lord! He got to work and really had to wrestle with the wheel to get it off. He got the spare on and off I went to America’s Tire. Fortunately, I had a certificate for that tire and got it for free, not counting labor. I had the tire with the plug in it replaced as long as I was at it. I got out of there with two new tires at nominal cost. The experience reminded me of these song lyrics:

Jesus, take the wheel

Take it from my hands

Cause I can’t do this on my own

I’m letting go

So give me one more chance

And save me from this road I’m on

Jesus, take the wheel.

In Matthew 16:24 Jesus says, “Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.”  We need Jesus to have the steering wheel in our lives or else we can expect a blow-out and a crash is coming.

My whole experience was a miracle of protection! My only regret is that I didn’t take a picture when the tire was still on the car but I did take this:
