In Gratitude and Prayer for Those Who Serve

by Justin Linscheid on November 11, 2024

My dad told me that being drafted into the Army for two years, “was a million-dollar experience that I wouldn’t pay a dime to do again.” It included sacrifice, homesickness, suffering, and endurance. It also instilled discipline, skills, perspective, and a perseverance that have reaped benefits for a lifetime. All in all, when I talk to him about it, I know he did it as an act of service.

On this Veterans Day, we pause to honor the brave men and women who have selflessly served our nation, often facing unimaginable challenges and sacrifices. Their courage reflects the heart of Christ, who laid down His life for us. In John 15:13 Jesus said, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” Soldiers exemplify this love, defending not only our freedoms but many values we hold dear. May we express our gratitude for their service, recognizing that they have answered a call much greater than themselves.

As we reflect on the sacrifices of our veterans, we are also called to pray for their healing and restoration. Many carry invisible wounds that linger long after their service has ended. Let us lift them up in prayer, asking for God’s peace to embrace them and for His strength to sustain them. In Isaiah 41:10, God promises, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” On this day, may we honor not only their sacrifices but also commit ourselves to support and care for those who have served, perhaps with a prayer for them today. Let our hearts be filled with compassion, and may our actions reflect the love of Christ as we serve those who have served us! Thank you for your service!
