Helping People Believe

by Jon Hathorn on October 15, 2020

"Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. As a result, many of them believed, as did also a number of prominent Greek women and many Greek men. " Acts 17:11-12

This week I have been using various school classes and teachers to help convey Biblical truth in our daily devotions, and so here is the last one in this series.

He was a professor at University of the Pacific, and I can't think of anyone who didn't love his class. Great teacher, great knowledge, enthusiasm, insightful, had the time to talk with students, made the class very engaging with a combination of group projects, lectures, bonus information, and a great deal of practical application.  He was a communications expert teaching a class in communications.  His classes were always packed.  I really enjoyed the class and considered him an expert, but I also wondered if he had a relationship with Jesus Christ. So I decided to do my part and present something.

Our church was having a guest speaker all week at church, and so I invited the professor to attend.  How does a college student invite a college professor to a church meeting? Well you say something like this, "I was wondering if you could give me some feedback about communication.  Our church is having a special guest speaker and I was wondering if you would come and give me some feedback.  Would you share with me the value of content versus delivery - and share with me the importance of what is being said with how it is being communicated? I believe this guy is a great communicator and I also think what he is communicating is life changing; and I would like to know what you think."  Well, he came and that night he acknowledged Jesus Christ as the Savior of the world and gave his heart and his life to Jesus Christ.  He said it was one of the greatest presentations of head and heart he had ever heard.  He ended up becoming a seminary professor about communication and the presentation of the Word of God.

This passage in Acts 17 says, "Many believed, as also a number of prominent Greek women and many Greek men." The Word of God does not return void.  It is true and the truth will set us free.

Let's review this passage from the past couple of days: Let's remember how practical the Word of God is for our lives, that we should be enthusiastic and eager to read and study the Word of God, that we should examine the Word of God carefully and know what it says, and we should share the Word of God with others and evangelize the world. Let's be like the Bereans.  Maybe there is someone you can be praying for to meet Christ.
