Habits

by Jon Hathorn on November 23, 2020

“And according to Paul’s custom, he went to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures” Acts 17:2

Most of us have a morning routine of some sort: face washing, shower, shave, coffee, cologne or perfume, flossing and brushing teeth, vitamins, toast, juice, a moment with the Lord and maybe some exercise. We just do them. They are a habit. And we often realize when we have forgotten one of them.

The habits listed in the previous paragraph are good ones to develop. They are healthy habits - and are good for our hygiene good for feeling better and certainly make us a much nicer person to be around.

BUT, maybe you know from experience people who have some bad habits that are bad for relationships and toxic for harmony and working together. In  the picture above there are several habits that just add stress to our lives and to the lives of those we come in contact with.

Psychologists say it takes 21 days to end a habit or 21 days to start a new one. I believe that as the fall arrives and harvest season is upon us, this is a good time for each of us to ask a trusted family member or friend a sincere question. “Have I developed any bad habits during COVID and shelter in place that I should work on changing?" Bad attitudes, use of time, over-sensitivity, watching too much TV, on the computer too much, or even snacking too much out of worry.

As we enter the harvest season, we will be reaping what we have sown, and this may be a great time to do a little check up. Before being called the Apostle Paul and being known as one who shared the gospel and built up the body of Christ, he was called Saul and he was known for the habit of persecuting Christians. Today is a great day to do a little check up and address any spiteful habits.
