Folding Laundry

by Heidi Verheyden on March 05, 2021

“Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.” Proverbs 8:13

Everyone I know has a chore that they do not like, regardless of how long it takes. It is just really hard to find the motivation to do the task. At the top of my list is folding and putting away the laundry.

At our house, the washer is inside the house, but the dryer is in the garage, kind of an odd arrangement. That's the way it has always been and it's a little hard, but it's not worth moving. We just use the arrangement and make the best of it. However, this has caused me to come up with a ridiculous excuse for not needing to start the laundry, and an even greater excuse for not folding laundry. I decided that if the laundry is in the garage, it is not in the house and does not need to be addressed, because it is not inside and it is not seen. Ridiculous I know, but it is the excuse I came up with and have been using for a while now.

It only takes a few minutes to fold one load of laundry. Instead, because of my lame excuses and procrastination, it takes almost an hour.  Why an hour, because I end up with almost five loads to fold at one time. Yikes! Not ideal at all, but I bought into this little lie and have continued to stick with my procrastination and excuses.  Then I must deal with my consequences of it pilling up.  Instead of just doing it right away in small increments the pile grows, and grows, and grows.

In our lives, it is easy to come up with little excuses to put something off, because we spin a story and ignore it, and we pretend it doesn't exist. The same is true with our spiritual walk, we make up lies so that we do not have to deal with the convictions that God has laid on our hearts.

When there is a stirring of convictions and something that we need to address, do not keep making up the excuses or buying into these little lies that we tell ourselves. Go before the Lord and ask for His help to address the issues. Is there anything that you need to take before the Lord to have addressed? It will be so much better to deal with it right away then letting it pile up into a giant pile of clothes.
