Feasting in Trials

by Justin Linscheid on January 27, 2023

“You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings.”  Psalm 23:5

Usually when we are in the midst of an enemy or challenge we don’t consider sitting down for an abundant meal.

Pastor Charles Spurgeon said about this verse, “When a soldier is in the presence of his enemies, if he eats at all he snatches a hasty meal, and away he hastens to the fight. But observe: ‘Thou preparest a table,’ just as a servant does when she unfolds a feast on a peaceful occasion. Nothing is hurried, there is no confusion, no disturbance, the enemy is at the door and yet God prepares a table, and the Christian sits down and eats as if everything were in perfect peace.”

This is the power of having God as your Good Shepherd. Life takes on a different perspective and flavor. We are no longer fretting in fear or drowning in hopelessness. Even in the midst of our greatest foes, we can peacefully enjoy fellowship with our Savior.  Despite the dangers about and the presence of enemies, the psalmist David enjoyed the richness of God’s provision. He was refreshed by a head anointed with oil; his cup was over-filled. God is not intimidated or overcome by even the greatest of foes.

What is a challenge that you are facing today? Does this challenge seem heavy and perhaps even insurmountable? Now consider the truth that God Almighty and all His resources are with you. Philippians 4:6-7 tells us, “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.”

David, who wrote Psalm 23 is the same David that defeated the giant Goliath. He saw first-hand the victory that God has over the mightiest of foes. Despite the giants that stand against us, God is greater still. This allows us to feast where there would otherwise only be famine.
