Execution

by Jon Hathorn on January 01, 2025

“And be thankful giving praise to God always.” Colossians 3:17
The word, “execution” is very interesting and almost always has us thinking about achievement, deadlines, and tangible success. The diagram above is what most people picture about execution. A friend recently shared the following quote with me. “The most difficult challenge people face is not the lack of knowledge but the lack of execution.” Certainly, many people have great ideas, a well-resourced team, and all the knowledge necessary to complete tasks, but if these plans never get executed, many would say it’s a failure.
I want to challenge our thinking of the word execute and focus on “being.” I am not sure who ever started calling people “human beings,” but I think it’s a great word combination. We often value people only by what they do and not by who they are. Let me explain…
Every year, January brings a boatload of big intentions and resolutions. “I’m going to lose weight.” “I’m going to get in shape.” “I’m going to finish that project.” We all have our lists. But, what typically gives us a pat on the back is doing those things. In fact, many feel like a failure for not “doing.” People who we think of as successful have the will, ability, and determination to execute their plan until it’s completed.
Today I’d like you and I to think just about being for a bit. Set aside accomplishments for a moment and appreciate that God made you. Turn the tables for a minute and think about the execution that God did and is doing in your life. He loves you and adores you, why not take some time to appreciate Him?
