Breathe

by Harry Ulep on May 27, 2021

“Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls”. Matthew 11:29

In high school, one of the primary words that used to describe us students was "busy". We found great joy in being with friends, being blessed with a free period each year of high school (some people two free periods) and enjoying life as it was. However, the term “student” always seemed to take the backseat. Schoolwork was the last priority as we would goof around and take time for granted. All of it leading to that reoccurring word “busy”. We would push our limits trying to write our essays over the passing periods, study for tests in the moments leading up to the dreaded “put the books away” statement, and using every minute of time we had left to complete projects for our classes.

The difficulty here is this: because of our busyness with school, friends, and other things on our plates, we lost sight of what was important. We filled our schedule with so much to do, that we were spread thin and even overwhelmed. Our education no longer became a point of emphasis, but rather a task that is done and forgotten. Did we do well in school? Yes. Did we do what was asked of us? Yes. Did we take in all that we should have to be successful going forward? Not so much.

In a song called “Breathe” by Jonny Diaz, he sings these lyrics:

It's ready, set, go it's another wild day
When the stress is on the rise in my heart I feel You say just

Breathe, just breathe
Come and rest at My feet
And be, just be
Chaos calls but all you really need
Is to just breathe

When we slow down the busyness of life and take a moment to reflect, what are our priorities?  What is on our overflowing plate of responsibilities? But most importantly, where is God in the midst of it? Is our relationship with God something that has been taken for granted? Is spending time with Him just another task to check off of our lists of things to do? Or do we rely on God daily, in every moment, and be in His presence through all we do. Don’t allow God to take the back seat as we go through life. Today, don’t allow worry, stress and busyness to be the priority. Slow down, spend time with God, and find rest. HE is the priority.
