An Apple A Day

by Harry Ulep on February 26, 2021

“My mouth is filled with Your praise, declaring Your splendor all day long”  Psalm 71:8

Before I was a believer and prior to consistently going to church, I think one phrase captured my perspective on faith: “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”. Or in this case “an hour a week is all I will seek”. I viewed church as nothing more than an hour a week that is supposed to be part of our lives because you were told to. It was something that was right to do. There wasn’t ownership to what I was learning or for what was being preached. It was simply knowledge and nothing more.

It finally clicked when, as I was discovering my faith, a Pastor told me, “faith is not just knowledge you have, it is a lifestyle”. How incredible is that? Up to that point, I viewed faith as a task. A simple, one-time, never revisited task. Like a decision that consisted of knowledge and no relationship. But faith is so much more. It is a lifestyle that praises God all day long through our words and actions. It is the acknowledgement of who God is and that He is worthy of our worship for thousands of reasons far beyond our comprehension. He is Lord God Almighty.

As I reflect back on that time, I knew I was missing the mark. I wasn’t living my life completely for God, I was only giving Him a portion. Many of us have seasons of busyness where life has more than our plates may handle. Sometimes in the midst of the chaos, we put faith on the back burner or completely out of the equation. God seeks our hearts for more than just a portion of our lives. He seeks the entirety of it in obedience and surrender. Let’s continue to be strong in faith, praise God all day long regardless of the season, the circumstances, and say You are God and worthy of worship always.
