Philippians 3:3–4 (NLT) “For we who worship by the Spirit of God are the ones who are truly circumcised. We rely on what Christ Jesus has done for us. We put no confidence in human effort, though I could have confidence in my own effort if anyone could.”
There are some verses in the Bible that give such a clear picture of the Christian life, and this is one of them. The Christian life isn’t about working our way into peace with God. It’s about resting in the grace that’s already ours in Christ. It’s about letting go of any performance mindset and any idea that we have to earn His friendship.
Instead, we live in worship, in spirit and in truth, and we boast in Jesus. It’s not about making much of ourselves or leaning on our own achievements. It’s about finding joy, peace, and celebration in what He has already accomplished for us.
I’ve noticed in my own life that when I lose joy or peace or worry, it’s usually because I’m slipping back into relying on my own performance. But when I remind myself that everything I need for joy and peace is already mine in Jesus, that’s when I see the fruit of the Spirit spring forth.
So, keep Jesus front and center. Don’t pick up the burden of performance again. Rest in Him.
Question for Reflection: What are the ways I notice I am I tempted to lean on my own performance instead of trusting in Christ?
