Choose Yoour Battles

“Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes.” Psalm 37:7

I have a very strong sense of justice. Sounds good… but that gets me into trouble sometimes. It used to get me into trouble a lot, but age and the wisdom that comes with it is a wonderful thing!

Often the Lord reminds me to keep my mouth shut when I see or feel an injustice. My first instinct is not usually love… it’s anger and wanting to scream at the person for being rude, selfish, or demanding their own way without regard for others. Yes, standing up for what is right can be a good thing, but I’ve learned over the years to pick my battles. God never promised us that life would be fair. All these people here with us make sure of that! It’s good to fight for what is right, and there are times when we must – but often, the “injustice” we feel is quite petty and we’re likely not going to change the other person’s mind or behavior anyway. I’m learning not to sweat the small stuff. I’m learning to choose love and kindness rather than anger. It’s not easy in today’s world, but Ephesians 4:2-3 (NIV) says, “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” Stand up for what is right when it really matters. Let it go when it doesn’t.
