Anchored in Truth

“I am telling you this so no one will deceive you with well-crafted arguments.” — Colossians 2:4 (NLT)

Shortly after I became a believer in Christ, I had a few unexpected visitors. One weekend, some Mormons knocked on my door. The next weekend, Jehovah’s Witnesses came by and they kept coming for several weeks. They were kind, well-spoken, and their arguments were carefully prepared. It was a wake-up call: there are many persuasive voices in this world, and not all of them speak truth.

Paul warns the believers in Colossians 2:4 to be alert because deception doesn’t always come with red flags. Sometimes it comes neatly packaged in “well-crafted arguments.” That’s why we’re called to be rooted in Scripture, grounded in the gospel, and filled with spiritual wisdom. The Bible isn’t just for encouragement, it’s our safeguard against being led astray.

There are many belief systems that sound convincing on the surface. But truth isn’t just about how something feels, it’s about who Jesus is and what He has revealed. If we don’t stay anchored in His Word, it’s easy to drift.

The good news is that God hasn’t left us defenseless. He’s given us His Spirit, His Word, and His people to help us discern truth from error. So let’s stay rooted. Let’s be people of the Book. Because when the world offers imitation, we need to be able to recognize the real thing.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for giving me Your Word to anchor my heart and guard my mind. Help me to grow in wisdom and understanding so I won’t be swayed by clever-sounding lies. Teach me to recognize truth and to cling to You always. Amen.
