“You shall walk in all the way that the Lord your God has commanded you…” Deuteronomy 5:33
Ever thought about this: “What if God wrote a review of my life? What would that look like? What about a friend writing one? Would it be skewed because he is a friend? Would the review from God and one from a friend be similar?” These are great questions to ask yourself from time to time.
As my daughters grew up, I would occasionally ask them, “How am I doing as a dad?” I would also ask my wife a similar question about being a husband.
Well, I will use an example from a recent article I read who asked the same question:
I vividly recall the first time I posed this question to my eldest son. His response genuinely surprised me. He asked, “Will I be punished?” I didn’t anticipate such a direct question. I reassured him, “No.” He then expressed his concern, saying, ‘Dad, you’re away from home many evenings. I don’t see you as much as I’d like.’ It was a wake-up call for me. I realized that I needed to make changes to my schedule and spend more time at home. I’ve never regretted that decision or asking my kids how I’m doing. They didn’t know it but they were essentially writing a review of my life and behavior.”
I don’t know how busy this man was – but I do know what everyone must ask this same question of our relationship with God. As Matthew 5:16 reminds us, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” So, let me ask you, “How are you doing as a follower of Jesus.”
