The Gift of Asking

Philippians 4:6–7 (NLT) — “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace…”

If God already knows everything, why do we need to ask Him for anything? It’s a fair question—and a common one. The truth is, prayer isn’t about giving God new information; it’s about opening ourselves to Him. When we tell God what we need, we’re choosing to turn our hearts toward Him rather than relying on ourselves.

God has given us the gift of personal responsibility, but not so we can be self-sufficient. Left to our own devices, we often chase the wrong things and lose our peace. But when we take that responsibility and use it to draw near to Him—to trust, to ask, to thank—we find a different kind of life: one marked by relationship, not just results.

Prayer is about connection and it is also about God making a means for us to contribute. God could act without us, but He chooses to draw us in and allows us to participate. He wants us to know Him, love Him, walk with Him, and join in with Him. That’s why asking matters. It’s relationship. It’s participation. It’s His gift to us.

Prayer: Father, thank You for inviting me to bring my needs to You. Help me to trust You more, to lean on You instead of worrying, and to open my heart to You daily. Let my relationship with You grow stronger as I learn to depend on You in everything. Amen.
