A Cup of Cold Water

I was at a low point. I wasn’t feeling particularly fruitful in my Christian Walk. I don’t think Jesus was speaking this over me, but discouragement had crept in, nonetheless. I had started comparing myself to others—other believers whose ministries seemed to be thriving, who were being elevated and celebrated. My walk didn’t look like theirs, and I began to feel like I wasn’t measuring up.

By the grace of God, I had the humility to share this struggle with a Christian brother. He gently reminded me of Jesus’ words: “And if you give even a cup of cold water to one of the least of my followers, you will surely be rewarded.” — Matthew 10:42 (NLT)

That verse hit me in a new way. I believe Jesus intentionally chose such a small act—something as simple as offering a cup of cold water—to show that the way of goodness is available and accessible to everyone. He didn’t say we have to win a thousand converts, fill a stadium, or build a world-changing ministry. He said that offering a single cup of cold water in His name is an act of service unto Him. Just a cup—not a Big Gulp, not a bucket, not a well, not a reservoir. A cup.

Jesus was deliberate in saying this. Anyone can give a cup of water. You don’t have to be incredibly gifted, highly skilled, or in a position of influence. You just must be willing—willing to serve Jesus, willing to give. And to God, that’s what matters most: the orientation of our hearts toward Him and toward serving others in His name.

That cup of water might look different in each moment. It might be holding a crying child when their parent needs a break. It could be telling your spouse you love them—not just in passing, but with intentionality, looking them in the eyes and letting them know you’re truly for them. Sometimes, it’s lending a listening ear to someone carrying a heavy burden or offering a word of encouragement to a friend who feels unseen. It’s the handwritten note, the extra five minutes to check in on someone, the whispered prayer for a struggling co-worker, the kind word to a weary cashier. A cup of water can even be the choice to forgive, to show grace when it would be easier to judge, or to sit in silence with someone who just needs to know they’re not alone.

Don’t let worldly expectations or the enemy’s lies cause you to despise the small acts that are so dear to God’s heart. The enemy will try to discourage you, to convince you that what you’re doing isn’t enough. But don’t believe that lie. Simply live today with a heart set on loving God and loving others, knowing that even the smallest act done in His name is cherished by Him.

In a world that often measures greatness by big achievements, Jesus reminds us that God treasures ordinary and simple acts of love. It may not be noticed by the others, but it is always seen and valued by God, and that is a great reward.
