“Prayer is not merely a list we bring to God but a practice that forms us in His love.”
We often think the greatest treasure is a “yes” to our deepest desires. But the true treasure is God Himself. This is why, at times, God’s answer to our personal requests is “no.” Our felt needs are not always our true needs, and the Father knows what will truly shape us to become more like Jesus.
We need His presence and power to undergo this transformative process. Time with God shapes us—it heals us, refines our motives, and changes us from the inside out. Jesus demonstrated this in Gethsemane when He prayed, “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done” (Luke 22:42). In His surrender and trust, Jesus found strength to fulfill the Father’s greater plan. This is an example to us.
God wants good for you. He wants good through you. Trust Him and surrender to His love for you. Let us come to God not only with our requests for things but with open hearts, asking Him to shape us, heal us, and make us more like Jesus. Prayer is often simply about being with God more than getting something from Him- though He does delight in giving His children with good gifts (Mt. 7:11). In His presence, we find the treasure our souls truly long for.
Take 5-10 minutes just to be still before God:
Father, here I am. Search my heart and know me. I am open to You. Help me to be still and know that You are my good and loving God—the God who heals, shapes, mends, transforms, empowers, and is here with me now. Make me more aware of Your presence. Thank you for loving me and wanting to be with me.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
