What Do We Worship?

Not long ago, my wife and I were grabbing dinner at a BBQ place out of town. As I stepped into the men’s restroom, I noticed this NFL poster hanging on the wall. It looked like any other sports advertisement. But as I looked again, I realized it was practically a gospel tract of sorts—urging men to dedicate their Sundays to worship at the arena. I say this somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but it struck me as a vivid reminder of how much in our culture clamors for our worship.

We live in a world full of voices competing for our devotion—whether it’s sports, entertainment, careers, or even things like family and community. While these are not inherently wrong, they can easily take a place in our hearts that belongs to God alone.

Scripture reminds us in Matthew 22:37, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” True worship isn’t just about singing on Sunday mornings or even attending church—it’s about giving God first place in every area of our lives.

So, what does worship look like for us today? Maybe it’s pausing to spend time in His Word instead of scrolling on our phones. Maybe it’s choosing to trust Him with our finances rather than obsessing over controlling and building our account. Maybe it’s choosing to prioritize worshiping God with His people on Sundays instead of skipping church to watch the game. Ultimately, worship is about surrendering our hearts to God in prayer and saying, “Lord, You are worthy of all my life and praise.

As you reflect on your own life, consider what may be clamoring for your worship. Is there something—even something good—that’s crowding out the One who deserves your all? Let’s turn our hearts fully to Jesus and remember that He alone is worthy.
