Bad News, Good News

Psalm 40:17, “But as for me, I am poor and needy; may the Lord think of me. You are my help and my deliverer; you are my God, do not delay.”

The Bible doesn’t sugarcoat our condition. It gives us some hard truth—bad news, in fact: we are poor and needy. We are broken. We are fallen. “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” On our own, we are trapped in sin and powerless to break free. Left to ourselves, our lives are marked by struggle and defeat, because something deep within us is not as it should be. All is not well.

But here comes the good news: the Lord sees us in our need—and thinks of us. That is, He is moved with compassion. Jesus said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit,” because those who recognize their need are the ones God draws near to. He loves them. He helps them. He delivers them.

Christ reaches into the mess of our lives with power and grace. He lifts up the fallen. He restores the broken. He brings freedom to those who are trapped.

So, call upon Him today. He delights in rescuing those who know they need Him. Those who admit their need are not cast aside—they are called blessed. Because when they turn to Him in trust, they discover the deliverance, freedom, and hope they’ve always longed for.
