DO YOU KNOW HIM?

Here’s a shockingly despondent verse:

“Who is like the Lord our God, the One who sits enthroned on high…?” (Ps. 113:5)

When meeting someone for the first time, one first learns his or her name. From there an acquaintance can grow and deepen knowledge and understanding of the person over time.   In Jacob’s encounter with God, Jacob said, “Please tell me your name.”  But He replied, “Why do you ask my name?  Then He blessed him there (Gen. 32:29).  I wonder if no name is given because no simple, single name can define who God is.  Yet it is enough to know that He is the God who blesses.

The Navigators offer a daily devotional on the names of God –too many to mention here, but speaking to the character of God as He chooses to reveal Himself to each of us who seek to know Him.  Section 1, for example, describes Him as the holyI AM Moses meets at the burning bush, speaking to His self-sufficiency and ability to provide every need.  The rest of Section 1 describes Him as infinite, omnipotent, immutable, omniscient, and omnipresent.  FollowingSections contain 30 other descriptors exploring the greatness of our God, yet even so it is not nor can it be an exhaustive list.

Adam and Eve had the extraordinary opportunity to walk with God in the Garden of Eden, but it was a missed opportunity because God asked, “Where are you?” (Gen.3:9).   Ironically, they fell for Satan’s ruse telling them they would “be like God” (Gen.3:4).   If they only knew the secret to becoming like someone we admire is to spend time in their presence.   May our hearts yearn to know God the way He wants to know us.

I hope the following song by James Cleveland will lead you to a quiet time of worship now.  You can copy and paste he URL into the address bar to hear the song “God Is.”
