What’s In a Name?

I have an unusual name. My parents got it out of the dictionary of Christian names. It means consecrated to God. My maiden names is Bachman. I was raised to be very proud to be a Bachman and when I look at all my cousins, I am proud. It took longer to be proud of Karnes because my husband was an only child and his father was long gone, but we have created quite a family of Karnes now and I am quite proud.

All that being said, the name I am most proud of is the name Christian. I was also taught to be proud of that name and to live up to its expectations.

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.” Proverbs 22:1

Back in Bible times, the name Christian was rarely used. Christians were just called “followers of the way”. That implies action and membership. It is not static, but a way of life. The Jesus way.

“Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: ‘The Lord knows those who are his,’ and, ‘Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.’” 2 Timothy 2: 19
