Good Deeds Are Contagious

You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free.  But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. – Galatians 5:13

A recent human interest story told of a teenaged girl who lost control of her small car in Wyoming’s snowy conditions, careening into a passing truck as she tried to stop.  After checking that his children in the back seat were okay, the driver assisted the young girl.  Nobody was hurt, but her car was a total loss.  His heart went out to the teen, who had purchased her first car with after-school earnings from her part-time job.

The reporter added a brief glimpse into the life of this teen girl…an honor student at the local high school and active member of her church youth group.  The man, whose truck was slightly damaged in the accident, initiated a fund-raising campaign and with enough donations, took the teen and her parents shopping for a new car.  They were all understandably overwhelmed and grateful for his generous and loving spirit.

This kind stranger, the victim of her unfortunate accident, could have pelted the teen with cursing, accusations and threats in a nasty confrontation, resulting emotional damage and trauma for her and his own children looking on.  Instead, his approach resulted in a memorable teaching moment, a modern-day example of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:30-37).

The reporter ended his telling of the story with this… “Good deeds are contagious.”

Indeed they are…or at least they should be!  A lot of folks try to live with this goal in mind: to do at least one good deed every day.  How about you?  How might your good deed enrich and add a loving touch to someone’s life today?  Blessings on you as you make that happen!

PRAYER:  Lord, your word speaks of Christ in me, the hope of glory.*  Let your light shine through me today as I embrace every opportunity to represent you in the world around me.  In His name, amen.

*Colossians 1:27 – To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.
