The Generous Exchange

“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.” 2 Corinthians 8:9 (NIV)

Have you ever considered that Jesus emptied his bank account to cover a debt you could never repay? That is the grace and generosity of God on full display. Jesus had every heavenly resource at his fingertips, but He stepped into our poverty so we could share in His abundance.

This picture of divine generosity should shape the way we live. Ok, maybe that doesn’t mean draining your entire bank account today—we still need to pay the bills and buy a few groceries. But you get the point. We follow a God who allowed us to benefit at His expense. That kind of love is not tightfisted. It gives freely.

As Christians, we are called to live open-handed lives. Yes, with wisdom. Yes, with discernment. But also with bold generosity and a heart that reflects the extravagant grace we have received.

“If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?” 1 John 3:17

Lord, help us to give like You give. Not out of guilt or fear, but from the overflow of grace and as a reflection of how generous you have been toward us.
