Stronger than a Legion

I recently heard a teaching on one of Jesus’ well-known miracles because it came up in our online women’s Bible study group.

“As Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs… Jesus asked him, ‘What is your name?’ ‘Legion,’ he replied, because many demons had gone into him. And they begged Jesus repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss. A large herd of pigs was feeding on the hillside. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into the pigs, and he gave them permission. When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and drowned.” — Luke 8:27–33

As many times as I’ve read and heard this story, I had missed something that Pastor David, our study leader, pointed out:
Jesus was more powerful than a legion of demons.
(A Roman legion could number up to 6,000 soldiers.)

Wow. Let that settle in.

We serve an almighty God.
Nothing is too big for Him.
Nothing is too strong for Him.

When we find ourselves in despair, wondering if our situation could ever change, we can remember this: God is stronger. He can overcome anything in His perfect timing. All we have to do is ask—and trust in the Lord.
