The Zeigarnik effect

by Jon Hathorn on April 26, 2024

“Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will succeed.” Proverbs 16:3

I received this information from a friend and thought it was great information and I would turn it into a word of encouragement.

Here is the idea. I never heard of Lithuanian-Soviet psychologist Bluma Zeigarnik, nor the Zeigarnik effect. The idea is that, when interrupted, there is attitude inside of us that says, “I should finish that task!”  And the reality is that statistics show finishing it happens. This principle states that the interruption will make the activity more easily remembered. Most people like to finish what they begin. Call it “human nature.”

Thinking about Jesus, He had many interruptions, but He never forgot that His mission was to come and serve us, first by showing His power and wisdom and then using that power to die taking our sins to the grave, and then ultimately show power over death. He finished what He started. Oh, He was often distracted and interrupted, but He stayed with the mission - praise the Lord

What about you and me? Is God someone we start with on Sunday and then forget about until 7 days later or do we daily return to spend time with Him - or even better do we find ourselves wanting time with Him throughout the day - and returning to thoughts of Him, about Him, and desiring to honor Him.

One of the ways that a friend of mine returns to his pursuit of God, is he puts a Bible verse on a little card for a week at a time and has it in his pocket. He knows that many times each day he will get keys, coins, or something out of his pocket - giving him a reminder to keep pursuing God.
