Living With Questions Not Answers

by Jon Hathorn on April 18, 2024

My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is strength of my heart, my portion forever.”  Psalm 73:26

Sometimes we wonder and sometimes we wander. We can be overwhelmed or even distracted. There are hard times and challenges - we get baffled by life’s circumstances, and we seek answers. But we get stuck in pondering and can even be overwhelmed with stuff, with loss, with questions, and emotional holes.

Many people, even people who believe in God and trust God, believe they have a right to comfort and pleasure. Certainly, these two things are more enjoyable than frustration, trials, and suffering.

I love the concept and truth that God is there - that the Scripture says in Hebrews 13:5 “Never will I leave you, Never will I forsake you.”                When you or someone you know is without answers….

Take the time to remember God’s past provisions in your life or the life of another.  We could probably all take a cue from Job found in the Bible in the book with his name. In 24 hours, he lost everything that mattered to him. Talk about loss. Talk about pain. How do you navigate that? He sat alone, but not without conversations with God. Maybe even a heated conversation with God? His mind and heart would remain unsatisfied and without, and yet he still asked them.

At the end of the narrative of his life, God was pleased with Job, even his heated questions. Why? Because Job chose to go to God with his grief. He trusted God with his future. He rested his case with the righteous Judge. Job did not feel compelled to answer all the questions or unravel all the burning enigmas. God would judge.

Loss is loss, emptiness is real - and there is no sugarcoating to it. But here are some things to consider in the midst of grief. Express your grief with God, including all the emotion that goes with it. Allow time for God to soothe the intensity of your grief. Focus on future joy. Grief, loss, heartache, and sorrow are excruciating, but there is hope for the future.
